protection rangers. They have been
awarded the Governor’s “Citizen’s
Crime Prevention Award” on numerous
occasions. Park Watch has also received
the Gettysburg Adams Chamber
of Commerce “Someone Special
Award” and the National Park Service
Northeast Region’s “Protection Award
for Excellence.” During special events,
Park Watch volunteers help with parking
details and other tasks.
LIVING HISTORY PROGRAMS –
Every year on weekends from April
through October we offer weekends
of living history presentations to park
visitors using all-volunteer units. The
units represent every aspect of the Civil
War including infantry, artillery, cavalry,
medical, signal corps, and more than
a dozen different civilian units. These
extremely popular volunteer programs
help illustrate the life of the soldier and
military drills.
ADOPT-A-POSITION –
These hard-
working volunteers cut brush, pull weeds,
rake, plant grass, pick up litter and do
many more tasks to help maintain the
historic setting of the battlefield. Without
Adopt-a-Position volunteers, most of this
work simply wouldn’t get done due to
budget and staffing restraints.
AT THE EISENHOWER NATIONAL
HISTORIC SITE –
Volunteers present
orientation tours, give living room talks
in the Eisenhower home, build and paint
fences, review oral histories, scan archival
historic photos, tend the Eisenhower
vegetable garden, present World War II
weekend events and more. New this year,
living history volunteers at the site will
present World War One day on May 9.
