Personal Experiences Many participants in the PMAA Future Leaders Mentorship Program have shared how the experience has had a lasting impact on their careers and personal growth. • Example 1: Greg’s Journey as a Mentee Greg Brink was excited to participate in the mentorship program as a mentee. He had been serving as Treasurer of the Coudersport Water Authority for one year and was invited by the PMAA regional director to consider participating in the mentorship program. He was eager to learn more about his role with the authority. He commented that all the mentors were so professional and easy to talk with. They all treated him like an equal and he felt like he could ask them any question without judgement. He felt comfortable texting or calling any time and quickly learned that they were there for him. They helped him solve many problems but also taught him about industry struggles too. He loved that they could listen to each other even if it were to “blow off steam” or discuss personal issues. Greg highly recommends this program to future mentors and mentees. • Example 2: Mike’s Growth as a Mentor Mike Sullivan has over 40 years of experience in the water and wastewater industry, and he has provided management and consulting services to municipalities and authorities. He currently serves as the Executive Director of the Northampton Bucks County Municipal Authority. He believes the importance of mentorship cannot be overstated. As infrastructure ages, regulations Participants of all backgrounds, whether they are board members, administrators, engineers, operators, administrative staff, or professional service providers, are encouraged to participate. tighten, and environmental challenges grow more complex, the need for experienced professionals to share their knowledge with the next generation has never been more crucial. For the water and wastewater industry, where specialized knowledge is essential, mentorship bridges the gap between theoretical understanding and real-world application. And by mentoring less experienced peers, he knows he can help cultivate a competent workforce and ensure that critical institutional knowledge is not lost. As a mentor, he has gained fresh perspectives and ideas from the mentees, staying engaged with modern technologies and approaches that are evident in our younger workforce. He has learned about their professional and career goals, their approaches to work/life balance and particularly the technical capabilities that were not needed when he entered the field. The information obtained from the mentees through these interactions has been beneficial to his authority as they recruit new employees. While Mike’s participation has been during its inaugural years, he views the PMAA mentorship program as a powerful tool for professional development, knowledge transfer, and career fulfillment. As the industry continues to evolve, fostering mentorship relationships will be crucial in preparing future leaders equipped to manage the complex challenges of working or managing in our industry. • Example 3: Networking Impact for Brooke Brooke Semanchik has been in the water/wastewater industry for eight years and is currently a Capital Management Analyst at Herbert, Rowland & Grubic, Inc (HRG). Through PMAA’s mentorship program, she was able to connect with a network of colleagues and industry professionals across the state who were outside of her network. Mentors provided invaluable insight into not only their professional careers but also their personal experiences of maintaining a satisfying work/ life balance. This was especially beneficial to her as a working mom. Sharing experiences with a mentor in a comparable situation prompted her to think about things in a new way and it is always nice to have a friendly face in the room when attending future events. The mentors will continue to be valuable resources that she can lean on as Brooke advances throughout the rest of her career. A Path for Future Leaders The PMAA Future Leaders Mentorship Program provides not only a support system for newcomers but also helps shape the future of the municipal authority’s sector. By pairing experienced professionals with those looking to grow in their careers, the program cultivates an environment where both mentors and mentees can thrive. As participants build relationships, share insights, and guide each other through the challenges of the industry, the mentorship program
