municipalauthorities.org │ 7 1MARK TM has helped us modernize these workflows by providing real- time ticket management, automated notifications, GIS integration, and mobile access to critical information. Instead of spending time tracking down information, staff can focus on evaluating tickets, responding to emergencies, and protecting critical infrastructure. What has impressed me most is the integration of 1MARK TM with ArcGIS. For many utilities, GIS has become the authoritative source of information for water and wastewater assets. Integrating Pennsylvania One Call tickets directly into the GIS environment allows us to see excavation activity in the same system they use to manage infrastructure assets, maps, drawings, and operational data. Rather than reviewing lists of tickets or searching through emails, staff can visualize proposed excavation activity directly on an ArcGIS map. They can immediately determine whether work is occurring near critical infrastructure, review nearby assets, access supporting records, and prioritize responses accordingly. In many cases, utility personnel can evaluate and clear tickets directly from the map without dispatching field crews, resulting in significant savings in time, fuel, and labor costs. When field investigation is required, crews arrive with a clear understanding of the location, nearby facilities, and potential conflicts. This provides a level of situational awareness and operational efficiency that simply is not possible with traditional ticket management methods. The GIS integration also creates opportunities beyond daily ticket response. We can analyze excavation activity across our service territory, identify recurring problem areas, better understand contractor activity, and use historical data to support planning and decision-making. By bringing ticket information into the same platform used for asset management and infrastructure planning, we gain a more complete picture of their operations. The integration with ArcGIS also enables us to develop dashboards, reports, and analytical tools that provide greater visibility into excavation activity throughout the system. Ticket data can be visualized geographically to identify excavation hotspots, recurring locate requests, areas with high contractor activity, and trends that may warrant additional investigation or infrastructure improvements. These insights help our utility make more informed operational and capital planning decisions while improving coordination between field operations, engineering, and management teams. By integrating 811 ticket data directly into ArcGIS, we have been able to transform ticket management from an administrative task into a strategic operational tool that improves efficiency, enhances regulatory compliance, and provides valuable intelligence for long-term system planning. What makes these solutions successful is not simply the software itself, but the partnership behind it. The most effective vendors take the time to understand an authority’s operations, listen to field personnel, and work collaboratively to develop practical solutions that fit existing workflows. We have seen similar success stories throughout Pennsylvania. Authorities that have embraced GIS integration, digital records, and modern workflow management tools have improved visibility into their systems, streamlined operations, and enhanced decision-making. These improvements ultimately benefit both utility staff and the customers they serve. As our industry continues to evolve, the role of associate members will become even more important. New regulations, infrastructure challenges, cybersecurity concerns, and workforce changes will require authorities to rely on knowledgeable partners who can help navigate these complexities. The relationship between authorities and associate members should be viewed as a partnership rather than a transaction. When utilities and vendors work together with a shared commitment to solving problems and improving operations, everyone benefits. PMAA plays an important role in fostering these relationships, and I encourage authorities to take advantage of opportunities to engage with associate members. The connections made today often become the partnerships that help solve tomorrow’s challenges. Strong partnerships, trusted expertise, and a commitment to continuous improvement are essential to the future of our industry. The success of Pennsylvania’s municipal authorities depends not only on the dedication of their employees, but also on the network of associate members who support them every day. S PMAA plays an important role in fostering these relationships, and I encourage authorities to take advantage of opportunities to engage with associate members. The connections made today often become the partnerships that help solve tomorrow’s challenges.
