Emerging Environmental Challenges Environmental challenges emerge continuously, making it difficult to predict what the next industry hurdle will be. As scientific knowledge advances, it reveals previously unknown problems requiring solutions. This issue examines several recently identified pollution threats to drinking water quality and quantity. We also highlight recent wastewater treatment achievements that have taken years to develop. Before the early 2000s, few people had heard of PFAS, yet we now face urgent regulatory pressures surrounding this contaminant. Today's emerging concerns include RFPs and microplastics, along with the substantial water demands of data storage and AI technologies. This issue explores these developing challenges to provide insight and understanding - essential first steps toward finding solutions.
